Composite waterjet cutting solutions

Composite materials are materials composed of man-made fibers (glass or carbon, etc.) and matrix (plastic, ceramic or metal). Commonly used are glass fiber composites, carbon fiber composites, aramid fiber composites, and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber composites. Materials, thermosetting resin-based composite materials, etc. Composite materials include hard matrix composites, such as metals such as titanium and ordinary steel, ceramics and plastics, glass fibers, carbon fibers, etc.; there are also soft matrix composites, such as plastics and man-made fibers.

Composite materials have a non-uniform and anisotropic layered composite structure, so the cutting of composite materials is a thorny problem in processing. Due to the inconsistent thermal melting point of the materials in the composite layer, it is obviously not suitable to use thermal cutting. The traditional processing method generally uses mechanical cutting, that is, cutting with a grinding wheel and a saw blade. This method is prone to two kinds of defects: one is cut damage, that is, cut delamination, tearing, burrs, wire drawing, etc. are generated near the edge of the cut. Phenomenon; The second is the delamination between layers, that is, the separation between the composite material layer and the layer, which loosens the internal structure of the component and reduces the strength and other properties of the component. Although laser can be used to cut some composite materials, laser cutting will debond the fibers in the heat-affected zone from the matrix, causing the material to coking and thermal cracking. The width of the incision is uneven. Local damage causes performance degradation.

Ultra-high pressure waterjet cutting is an ideal process to solve the above problems. Because water jet cutting is a non-contact cold working process, there is no delamination in the processing, and the material will not be coking and hot cracking. The ultra-high pressure water cutting speed is fast, realizing instant cutting, and the garnet/abrasive cutting also has the effect of grinding, making the cut surface smoother, smoother, and precise in size. Therefore, water jet cutting technology is the choice for composite cutting.
